![]() ![]() You don’t need to tear down your whole motorcycle just because it wont start. Sometimes you will need an adaptor cable just like this Yamaha 4-pin to OBD2 cable. You can use car Bluetooth OBD II readers for motorcycles to check any fault codes. If the fuel rail cant prime up to pressure you could have a leak or a faulty fuel pump. It should only take 2 or 3 seconds to prime up the fuel rails. An easy way to check is to listen for the fuel pump priming once you turn on the ignition switch. This is a classic reason why your motorcycle won’t start but turns over. Without enough pressure, the motorcycle injectors will not atomize the fuel correctly. With new fuel-injected motorcycles, a high-pressure fuel pump is needed to pressure up the fuel rails. Most modern motorcycles have an all-in-one stop/start ignition switch which prevents starting of the engine in the off position. If it is shorted to ground in some models you can still crank over the motorcycle but it will not start.Ĭlean the kill switch and check for continuity according to the electrical diagrams for your motorcycle. This then stops the engine spark when it is pressed. Some older motorcycles’ kill switches are wired to the ground or the negative cable. Moisture inside the ignition coil or the spark plug leads can cause a short to earth due to the high voltages involved. If you notice any swelling of the ignition coils or cracks in the spark plug leads replace the leads. Often this will be to hand tighten the spark plug and then use a socket to tighten the spark plug an additional 1/2 to 2/3 turn for new plugs with a gasket.Ĭheck over the ignition coil and spark plug leads once a year. Yes, you can tighten spark plugs without a torque wrench if you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Can you tighten spark plugs without a torque wrench? Make sure to follow the spark plug instructions to gap the electrode and how to tighten them down. They are a cheap part that if replaced regularly will help your motorcycle start at the first crank. I like to replace my motorcycle spark plugs every year at its service interval. Clean the terminals and tighten them up if it is loose. Any leakage from the battery acid can also cause corrosion on the battery terminals.Ĭheck the main neutral earth cable that it is attached to the frame and or motor. Once the copper clamps are clean and dry you can bolt it back down. If you notice white or green powder on the positive terminal you may have a hot joint.Ĭlean the active and neutral battery terminals with water and 300-grit sandpaper. This resistance will cause a drop in voltage from the battery to the starter motor. Any advice would be great.Over time motorcycle battery terminals can corrode and cause a hot joint. ![]() The previous owner made me aware of the issue when I brought the bike, and he told me that the owners before him also had the same issue.Īnyway, any of you guys have any clues as to what it could be? I'm in the process of changing the spark plugs, but to be honest I highly doubt they're the culprit here. I don't know if this is the same issue, or a separate one. After a few seconds of babying it it generally rights itself, and after a little more warmup time it runs great. By that I mean it sounds like the engine is struggling to tick over, and I often have to rev the bike to just keep it idling, and if I don't it will stall and turn itself off. When the bike is started initially it seems "tired". I currently have a brand new battery in it (brought last week) and it had no effect on this particular issue. It outright won't start without it, and it acts like a dead battery in terms of sound. ![]() It just needs to be sprayed once starting it again, even if the bike has been resting, doesn't seem to need any additional fluid. Anyway, the bike requires a squirt of starting fluid into the air filter every day. So my bike is a gsx250f, and it's a '93 model, so it's a little long in the tooth. I've got a fun "my bike won't start" question. Stolen bikes belong in local subreddits.Showing off Bikes or Gear? Click Here Looking for purchase advice? Click Here Join our discord! ![]()
